Bridging Gaps in Sustainability Education

Education is a critical component in sustainable development. For example, Goal 4 of the 17 SDGs addresses quality education, while UNESCO (2023) also recognises education as a key enabler for sustainable development. Despite the significance of education in driving the world’s sustainability transformation, it is a crucial fact that sustainability education is limited.

However, from different dimensions, it is urgent to improve sustainability education in schools. From a social perspective, effective education helps to build students’ social awareness. For instance, by incorporating sustainability-related topics in the school curriculum, students can obtain more knowledge about the current sustainability issues faced by the world. Such knowledge will make students more responsible citizens in future. A study developed by Biancardi et al. (2023) showed that sustainability education helps to shape students’ sustainable attitudes, and students feel more confident as the building blocks of future society. Thus, it is considered that sustainability education can foster students’ sense of community, making them more willing to engage with broader social issues.

Offering high-quality sustainability education also contributes to the creation of economic value. According to Boyes and Stanisstreet (2012), sustainability education can influence students’ decisions and behavioral intentions, allowing them to make more conscious decisions that can contribute to the development of the green economy. It is reported that 24 million new jobs by 2030 will relate to a green economy, but 54% of people globally do not believe they are qualified to take a green job (United Nations, 2020; Pearson, 2021). Sustainability education can close this gap because by equipping students with more knowledge and skills about sustainability, they can better engage with the green economy and create economic value for the wider society. Lastly, from an environmental perspective, sustainability education can enhance students’ awareness of environmental issues, motivating them to shift towards environmentally sustainable behaviors.

In this paper, the role that education plays in driving sustainable development is discussed. While the evidence shows that sustainability education in inadequate worldwide, this paper offers insights into how sustainability education helps to enhance students’ sense of responsibility, their ability to engage in the rising green economy, and their willingness to adopt sustainable behavior. Therefore, it is important to enhance sustainability education in schools so that the world can better address sustainability challenges.
