Is there justice in eating sustainably?

  • 1. The Food Justice Gap in Sustainable Eating

Sustainable eating often comes with higher costs, making organic produce, fair-trade items and responsibly sourced meats inaccessible for low-income communities. Sustainable eating should be an inclusive practice, not a luxury only available to those with financial means (The Broken Plate Report, 2023).

  • 2. Economic and Cultural Barriers

Sustainable alternatives come with price tags that reflect ethical labour practices and higher production costs and . Additionally, sustainable eating lacks diversity, often overlooking cultural food traditions and making it harder for some communities to find affordable options that align with their food heritage. Education and cultural inclusivity are essential for making sustainable eating accessible and appealing to all (Stanley et al., 2022).

  • 3. The Myth around sustainability

Peoples perceptions of food sustainability is highly divided. The public don’t know whether to trust what is being told to them. A product may be labelled “sustainable” based on one part of its lifecycle, like using organic ingredients, while other stages—such as packaging or transportation—could still have a high environmental impact. This partial view ignores the full ecological footprint and may mislead consumers into thinking a product is more sustainable than it is.

  • 4. Fair Labor and Consumer Action

True food justice includes fair wages and safe working conditions for farm and food workers. Supporting fair-trade and ethical brands and advocating for fair labour standards throughout the food supply chain is essential (Coulson and Milbourne, 2020). Consumers can drive change by supporting companies with transparent labour practices, helping ensure that sustainable eating is fair for both workers and communities.
